He was an important influence on distinctively British styles of avant-garde art in the mid- and late 20th century. The twenty-first century has seen a sustained period of Sickert research and exhibitions, crystallising his reputation as one of the most significant British artists of the early modern period. In addition, his celebrity was assured by the crime fiction writer, Patricia Cornwell, who published a book in 2002 claiming that Sickert was Jack the Ripper. Sickert was born in Munich to parents of Danish origin but British nationality. He settled in London with his parents in 1868.
